Normally I don't read books like yours.
I am a very skeptical person and with this type of book, I
ask myself "can I really benefit from this book"?
Nine out of ten times, I convince myself the answer is "no".
I read your book "Laid Off? Don't Stress!" because
I met you at a workshop and was impressed by your presentation.
Since I had just been laid off I thought maybe the stories
of others who had suffered the same fate, and survived, would
be beneficial.
I have to admit, your book was well worth the time it took
to read it. All of the contributors stories were interesting,
well written and concise. Although my "story" is
much different than theirs, I found something relevant in
almost all of them. Three of the stories were so compelling
I decided to contact the authors. Although I have not had
an opportunity to do so yet, I have every intention of following
through.
The story written by Sara Klug, "Embrace Change to
Find Your Passion", left me with a feeling of hope. At
the age of 61, I questioned whether any employer would be
interested in hiring me. Sara made changes in her life at
60. If Sara could do it, so can I!
Don Price's story, "How Moving Pebbles Lead to My Perfect
Job" was as inspiring as any television or movie I have
ever seen. He overcame almost impossible obstacles to find
his "life's calling". I am visually impaired and
have many times while looking for employment felt that I wouldn't
find anything because of my disability. This story made me
feel as though my disability is minor and certainly I can
over any obstacles in my way. If Don could do it, so can I!
The last story that I could relate to was written by Lynne
Behringer, "From Phone Cords to Apron Strings".
This lady had been laid off by Qwest Communications, the same
employer that laid me, and almost a thousand other people,
off. Lynne's story is proof that a negative can be turned
into a positive. If Lynne could do it, so can I!
